Spirit Journeys

Australia is blessed with some of the most significant wilderness areas in the world, places where we feel small and in context. Where we are thrown back on our own resources and discover more of who we are. Places in which to get perspective on the rest of our lives and our directions… 

Spirit Journeys are run in conjunction with the Uniting Church Leadership Institute, and seek to offer a means by which participants can take time out to reflect, rest and be renewed.

Who may benefit?
Spirit Journeys provides a range of experiences that means that most people can find a journey that suits them. The pace, distance and level of camping varies on the journeys. Different journeys have different themes – some focus on peoples artistic and creative responses to the desert, others may focus on indigenous stories or on young people.
Specific groups have also sought facilitation of their desert journey by one or more of the Spirit Journeys leadership team.

What do we explore?
Spirit Journeys offer a rich experience of engaging the wilderness in which you are traveling; of being a part of the community you are with, and of having the time and space to reflect on life and its meaning.
On the journey you will find nothingness and everything. You will have time to reflect alone and with others on the experience, on questions of purpose, anchors for life, faith and its meaning. You will be invited to explore your own edges and take time to stop and reflect on your own experiences of life, its directions and foundations.
In 2009 a range of journeys are exploring such places in inland Australia, visiting and exploring out of such unique and different communities, as Alice Springs and Broken Hill. There is a journey from Perth to Alice; another into the great Simpson Desert, another exploring the beauty of the MacDonnell Ranges, and another the rugged coastline of Shark Bay in WA.
